It's no secret that Lake Tahoe is a great ski destination, but some people were surprised to here Rand McNally name Lake Tahoe as the #1 Ski Destination in the United States and Canada for 2010-11.  Yes, that's ahead of Colorado giants like Vail and Aspen, and even British Columbia's Whistler-Blackomb.

How did they come up with this ranking?  They let the skiers do the talking.  Rand McNally's rankings are based on bookings for area resorts.  In other words, if there are a lot of people coming here, there must be a reason!!

Having lived in Truckee most of my life, I can say the rankings do not surprise me at all.  This is a world class community, not just a world class ski destination.  Having big name resorts such as Squaw Valley, Northstar, and Heavenly certainly helps, but I believe it's the little guys that keep this area so consistently strong.  Places like Sugar Bowl, Alpine Meadows, Kirwood, and Mt. Rose make the Truckee/Tahoe region click and keep people coming back for more.  Even better, this area isn't just a ski destination.  There are many people who like Tahoe/Truckee even better in the summer!!  Get up here and enjoy, we'll see you at the top!
