I was intrigued when I opened the paper today and saw an article titled, "What Makes a Mountain Community, Like Truckee, Attractive for Tech Professionals?"

For years I have been bragging to people from the San Francisco Bay Area about how Lake Tahoe, and particularly Truckee, can become the next frontier for people who have the ability to work from home.  We may have been a little slow in joining the high speed internet revolution, but once we did, my eyes bulged with potential.

For starters, who wouldn't want to live in Truckee/Tahoe?  This is the outdoor recreational Mecca, with incredible recreational opportunities year round.  I frequently tell people that 5 minutes after I leave the office, I'm enjoying the same activities everyone else does when they're on vacation.  This is a dream place to live, especially for young people (tech industry, silicon valley).

Truckee is also fortunate to have a great location for travel.  I-80 runs right through the heart of town, so driving anywhere in Northern California is a breeze.  Also, Truckee is fortunate to have easy access to the Reno/Tahoe Airport.  From most locations in Truckee you can reach this airport in less than 45 minutes and the route rarely sees any traffic.  I always point out that most people in the Bay Area spend more than 45 minutes getting to the nearest airport, because of traffic and parking.  Not only is the Reno/Tahoe Airport easy to get to, but it's also easy to fly in and out of.  Parking is easy and inexpensive ($8/day), security lines are almost unheard of (other than holiday periods), and there are daily direct flights to most of the major airports around the country.

If I had a career which involved a combination of working from home and travel, Truckee is certainly the place I would choose to make home.

If you read the article, you'll see it references a networking group, Silicon Mountain, who is meeting Monday, January 10th, to discuss this topic.  If it intrigues you, be sure to attend!
