Because of the lake itself, and its proximity to Old Highway 40 (the original highway linking Truckee and Lake Tahoe to the rest of Northern California), Donner Lake was one of the first areas of Truckee to be developed. Surrounded by scenic mountains, countless trees, and unmistakable snow sheds protecting the train tracks, Donner Lake and its community have a one of a kind feel. The lake is known for year round fishing, and extensive summer activities including boating, water skiing and wakeboarding, kayaking, swimming (be careful, the water temp is below 65 degrees most of the year), or just lounging in the sun on the numerous public docks on the north shore of the lake. They even host a triathlon, for those of you in better shape than us. People have also been known to skate or play hockey as Donner Lake frequently freezes over in the winter, but we’re too chicken to try.
HOMES AND CONDOS: homes at Donner Lake range from classic ski cabins (many built in the early 1900’s) to luxury lake fronts. Prices start just under $300,000, but the majority of homes are valued between $500,000 and $1 million. Lake front homes start at $1 million (get out your wrecking ball, you might want to start from scratch!) and go as high as $4 million. The layout of the streets is such that the majority of homes are within reasonable walking distance of the lake.
HOA AMENITIES: Donner Lake has an optional homeowner’s association. The association owns and operates a private beach area on the West End of the lake. Members can use the boat ramp, use the BBQ pits and picnic tables, play beach volleyball and horseshoes. For an additional fee members can store boats and trailers, and other water craft. Memberships are only available to people who own property in the Donner Lake area. There are a limited number of memberships. www.dlpoa.org.
